Program Proposals <---- EXTENDED DEADLINE!!!!!

Subject: RFP for the 2009 Cactus Kallah in TUCSON

4/2/08

This is your invitation to submit a proposal for ALL types of programming for the 2nd SW Regional -  Cactus Kallah.
Our theme this year is:
Drawing Water of Joy  -- UShavtem Mayim Besason.
We chose this theme to acknowledge that the intention of our gathering is indeed a sacred one: l'shem shamayim, for the sake of heaven and that we are composed mostly of water and our time in the desert helps us see the importance of water and joy in our lives.

Please read the following letter very carefully. It includes a description of the
program selection process as well as specific instructions for submitting a proposal.

LOCATION & DATE:
As you may already know, the 2009 Cactus Kallah will be held January 28 - February 1 at the Holiday Inn Express (Palo Verde) in Tucson.  The hotel is self-contained, set in an urban setting with easy access to the airport (5  min.), nearby restaurants, shops & galleries, and, of course, the mountains!  This is the same site that worked so well last year.

PLEASE ANNOUNCE the date and location of the 2009 Cactus Kallah in your community newsletters, and, if appropriate, in your announcements.

PROPOSAL REQUIREMENTS
(Please read thoroughly. Proposals that are incomplete will be returned for completion.)

Due Date:  July 5, 2008 Proposals for classes, workshops, Shabbat learning, and morning and evening davenning can all be submitted on the "program proposal form" below.  Please use one form per program submission.  We prefer to receive proposals as an MS Word attachment via e-mail at this address: (CactusKallah@mmaill.net).  Please title your attachment using your last name followed by "2009", for example "Lobb2009.doc".  Please include a resume or CV with references.  If you are unable to send your proposal through e-mail, you can mail your proposal (limit to one page, please) to 1502 E Greenlee Rd, Tucson, AZ  85719.

Similar to other Kallah gatherings, we encourage the content of program proposals to spring from a Jewish text or long-lived tradition.  That does not mean that the program needs to be text study. It simply means that the source of the ideas presented and developed in the program begin from a place that is grounded, connected, and attributed to the richness of Jewish heritage.  We encourage you to integrate the 4 worlds ¬ physical, emotional, intellectual and spiritual - in how you present your program. We are soliciting proposals which will incorporate some of the following modalities:  music, study of/wrestling with traditional and contemporary Jewish texts, psycho-spiritual processes, art, ritual, movement, connection with nature, storytelling, writing, healing, meditation and prayer.

TYPES OF PROPOSALS: *FULL* CLASSES Classes will meet daily for three sessions, approximately two hours each session (6 hours total).  This year, we are happy to pay full room & board and conference tuition.  We may be
able to offer some reimbursement for travel (sponsorship and grant money are being sought).  Classes chosen will be included
in the brochure, however they will only run if they receive adequate enrollment.
Teachers will be notified as soon as possible.
WORKSHOPS, Shabbat Programs, Afternoon Workshops, and Preparing for Shabbat programs are 1 to 2 hour individual sessions that are offered one time.  Workshop leaders receive a $50-100 honorarium towards tuition per session led ($50 for the 1-hour, $100 for the 2 hour). We anticipate having a number of programs on Shabbat afternoon. Students do not sign up in advance for these sessions. DAVENNING /Morning and afternoon davenning proposals will be accepted through June 20, 2008. The sessions are 30-45 minutes each and can be offered from one to three times. Davenning leaders receive a $36 honorarium towards tuition per session led.  OTHER PROGRAMS: All other ideas (community art projects, tikkun olam projects, field trips, etc.) will be considered on an individual basis.

**ALL CLASS AND WORKSHOP PROPOSALS are due to arrive in
the Kallah office NO LATER THAN JULY 5, 2008
(Sorry, late proposals will not be considered.)**

OTHER CONSIDERATIONS LEVELS OF STUDY
We want to make sure that we have beginner, intermediate and advanced course offerings at the Kallah, so we are asking you to identify the students you are targeting. Are certain skills or prerequisites required for your class?  Please be specific. (i.e.: Ability to read Chumash level Hebrew, ability to read un-pointed Rabbinic texts, ability to read Rashi script; Ability to daven in weekday nusach, ability to daven in High Holy Day nusach; Ability to leyn with Shabbos trop, Ability to leyn in chag trop; Previous study in the topic, listing a specific course if that makes sense.) Please also note if a mixed group would work for your class, or if it is more appropriate for those new to Jewish Renewal.

Please respond to this question as clearly as possible in your proposal.
FLEXIBILITY RE: VENUE As part of the program proposal form, you will find a section that asks you about your level of flexibility regarding the venue for your program.  For example, given the mix of proposals, the selection committee may feel that your program idea works better as an afternoon workshop or Shabbat afternoon learning.  Your flexibility will enable us to include your program and create the best overall program for our participants.

PROGRAM SELECTION PROCESS
The selection committee is made up of more than a dozen people with a variety of relationships to Jewish renewal and the Kallah - old timers, newcomers, with a mixture of ages, geographical locations, sexes and sexual orientations. The first pass through proposals is done with teacher name and bio removed and is rated simply on how the proposal reads and how the topic fits into the overall mix. The committee then makes its best effort to balance the program, taking into consideration factors such as new and returning teachers, geographical representation, as well as variety of topics offered.

Teachers will be expected to arrive by Sunday evening for a special pre-Cactus Kallah Teachers session (Monday and Tuesday) and to *attend* two telephone conference calls prior to Kallah.

I look forward to receiving and reading your program proposal. Feel free to forward this invitation to other people you feel would be a good match with the Kallah. We honor every contribution and thank you for your interest. If you have any questions, please contact me at the Kallah office -- CactusKallah@mmaill.net
Warm blessings, Shafir Lobb, 2009 Cactus Kallah Coordinator
